Nine years passed since Azerbaijan joined the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe, which plays exceptional role in protecting human rights in Europe, developing democracy in young independent states, keeping peace and security in the continent and solving global problems, is the complicated system for its diversity.
After declaring its independence, Azerbaijan gained favorable perspectives and real opportunities. Azerbaijan’s European integration was associated with two factors during first years of independence.
• Azerbaijan’s interest in joining European processes, political stability, legal and secular state building, human rights reforms created favorable condition for European integration.
• Azerbaijan’s geostrategic position and rich natural resources attracted Europe to Azerbaijan
• to create basis for developing perspectives in the human and civil rights sphere
• take a chance to establish high-level diplomatic relations with European countries
• to use floor of the Council of Europe to inform about its goals
Today, special attention is paid to the President Ilham Aliyev-led policy towards international organizations based on the perfect conception established by national leader Heydar Aliyev. Relationship with CoE is the most important thing. It is the only organization, which recognized the fact that Armenia occupied lands of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan has been a member of this international organization since 2001. National leader Heydar Aliyev`s principled and serious policy helped realize Azerbaijan’s desire to join the Council of Europe.
Ilham Aliyev who proved his worthy in the international arena as a politician, made every efforts to expose Armenia`s aggressive policy. The developments showed that Armenia was not ready for this.
Azerbaijan’s accomplishments in the Council of Europe in comparison with other ones is associated with Ilham Aliyev`s prestige and his leading Azerbaijani delegation.
PACE`s conferring diploma and medal upon Ilham Aliyev is the assessment the organization gives to his effective activity.
Thanks to Mr. Ilham Aliyev`s efforts in the PACE, Azerbaijan delegation’s role enhanced drastically. PACE confessed that lands of Azerbaijan were occupied by Armenia itself rather than just Armenians.
Azerbaijan conquered Council of Europe and became a leading country of Europe thanks to perfect diplomatic moves of President Ilham Aliyev and then-head of Azerbaijan delegation to PACE.
President Ilham Aliyev-led reforms in all spheres improved the country’s international image. Enrichment of the national development strategy in the new period established by the national leader suggests great prospects and Azerbaijan achieves successes in this direction.
